What size does a photo have to be for Kinja not to make it smaller? In other words, how big does the picture have to be to take up the whole column one a post is opened?
Also, how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

Typically, I've found your typical 1440x900 sized photo will do the trick. As long as it's larger than 800x600 or whatever.

Almost a year ago, it was 970x546 . I think the height restriction has been lifted, so it just has to be 970 pixels wide.

Here is the gist
Kinja is designed to be a flexible layout, for optimized viewing on as many devices as possible. To meet this standard, some of your images may be adjusted by the following rules:
Any image larger than or equal to 970px width will display as 970px wide as the top image. As a body image, it will display as 640px wide
Any image larger than or equal to 640px width, or smaller than or equal to 969px width will display as 640px wide
Any image equal to or less than 639px width will display as 300px wide
Any image less than 300px width will display as 300px wide
